And one more thing: even the best PC can falter if we don’t protect it from external threats – and I’m not talking viruses, I mean power issues. In Northern Virginia, especially in summer, we know thunderstorms can wreak havoc on our electric grid. That brings us to the next crucial topic: power protection.

Protect Your Investment: Surge Protectors and UPS Systems (A Must in NoVA)

Let me put on my electrician hat here (I do own an electrical contracting business, after all!). You’ve spent perhaps $2,000, $5,000, maybe up to $15,000 on a top-notch workstation PC and peripherals. The worst thing would be a power surge or outage frying it or corrupting your work. Unfortunately, in our region, power fluctuations happen – whether from summer thunderstorms, winter ice storms, or just the occasional grid hiccup. That’s why I tell all my clients and neighbors: use a good surge protector and ideally a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for your expensive electronics. It’s cheap insurance.
