A worn outlet or a failing switch rarely announces itself. It loosens, warms, and wears a little more with every plug and every flip, until the day it sparks or quits. Because the work looks simple it is one of the most commonly botched jobs in a house, and a reversed wire, a missing ground, or a GFCI in the wrong place leaves an outlet that works and is not safe.
Plugs that fall out and outlet faces that feel warm are listed below as separate symptoms. On a cheap receptacle they are usually the same fault: the wire was pushed into the push in hole on the back rather than wrapped under the screw on the side.
Why it matters. A push in connection holds the conductor with a small spring against a sliver of copper. A side screw clamps it along most of a turn. Both work on the day they are fitted. Years of heating up under load and cooling down again loosen the first one and not the second, and a loose connection is resistance, and resistance is heat, right there inside the box.
The honest version of "why not do it myself". The part costs a couple of dollars either way. The difference between a good job and a bad one is which two holes the wire goes into, whether the ground is actually connected, and whether hot and neutral ended up the right way round. If you are doing it yourself, use the screws. If you would rather we did it, that is what we would be doing.
