One Outdoor Unit or Several? The Answer Is Not Obvious
If you are doing more than one room, this is the decision that matters, and it gets glossed over because one outdoor unit sounds tidier and quotes cheaper. Here is both sides of it, including the parts that argue against the bigger sale.

The bit nobody mentions. A multi zone outdoor unit is sized for several rooms, but most of the time only one or two are actually calling. The compressor then has to turn down far enough to serve a single small head, and not every multi zone system can go that low. The ones that cannot start cycling on and off instead, which is exactly the behaviour that variable speed equipment was supposed to eliminate, and it gives back part of the efficiency you paid a premium for.
How we would actually decide it. Two or three rooms that will genuinely run together, and a budget that matters: multi zone is usually right. Rooms used at completely different times, or a house where losing all the cooling at once would be a serious problem, or zones with very different loads: separate systems are usually worth the extra. If somebody quotes you multi zone without asking how you use the rooms, they have not made this decision, they have defaulted.
