A Fan Is the Cheapest Comfort Upgrade in the House
It costs very little to run, it makes a warm room usable in summer, and in winter it can push settled warm air back down where you are. It is also the one fixture most likely to be hanging from the wrong thing, because a fan asks far more of a ceiling than a light does.
A Ceiling Fan Does Not Cool a Room
This is the single most useful thing to understand about a fan, and it is the opposite of how most people use one. A fan does not remove heat from a room. It moves air across your skin, and moving air carries heat away from you. The room temperature barely changes.
What that means in practice. A fan running in an empty room does nothing except add a small amount of heat from its own motor. If you leave fans running all day in rooms nobody is in, you are paying for the privilege. Turn them off when you leave the room, the same way you would a light.
And the part that costs us work. If a fan wobbles, that is almost always blade balance, not a mounting failure. A balancing kit costs a few dollars at any hardware store and takes about fifteen minutes. Please try that before you book anyone, including us. The wobble worth calling about is the one that comes with a rattle or knock at the mount, because that is the box talking, not the blades.
Why Fan Work Wants a Licensed Electrician
A fan looks like a heavier light. Mechanically it is a different problem.
The box has to be listed for fans
Not just strong enough. Listed and marked for ceiling fan support, and usually braced back to the framing. A box carrying a heavy chandelier can still be the wrong box for a lighter fan.
Downrod length and blade clearance
Too close to the ceiling and the fan moves almost no air. Too low and it becomes a hazard. Keep blades at least seven feet above the floor, and size the downrod to the ceiling rather than to the box the fan came in.
Separate switching needs a conductor
Controlling the fan and the light independently from the wall usually needs a wire that is not in the ceiling yet. That is the decision that changes the size of the job, and it is worth making before we start.
Older homes hold surprises
Brittle insulation, no ground, or a box nailed to nothing in particular. These tend to appear the moment the old fixture comes down, which is why we look before we quote the whole job.

Do I need a special box to hang a ceiling fan?
Yes, and this is the part that catches people out. A fan needs an outlet box listed and marked for ceiling fan support, usually braced back to the framing. A standard light fixture box is not a substitute, even if it is currently holding something heavier. A fan does not just hang, it twists and vibrates for every hour it runs.
Can you install a fan where there is only a light now?
Usually yes. The existing opening gives us a starting point, but the box almost always has to be changed for one rated for fan support, and if you want separate switching for the fan and the light we may need to run another conductor. Tell us what you want to control separately when you call, because that is what decides the size of the job.
My fan wobbles. Is that dangerous?
Almost never. Wobble is usually blade balance, and a balancing kit costs a few dollars at any hardware store and fixes most of it in about fifteen minutes. Wobble only matters when it comes with a rattle at the mount, because that points at the box or the bracket rather than the blades. Do not book a service call for a wobble until you have tried the kit.
Will a ceiling fan lower my cooling bill?
Only if you raise the thermostat to go with it, and only in rooms people are actually in. The fan cools you, not the room. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests a fan lets you raise the thermostat setting by about 4 degrees F with no loss of comfort, but that saving disappears the moment the fan is left running in an empty room.
One room is always hotter than the rest. Will a fan fix it?
Often not, and this is where being licensed in both trades helps. A single hot room is usually an airflow problem, a duct issue, or a system that was never balanced for that space. A fan will stir the hot air and make you feel a little better, but it does not remove heat. We will tell you which one you are dealing with rather than selling you a fan for a duct problem.
Do you install fans I bought myself?
Yes. Bring your own fan and we will install it correctly. We will also tell you before we start if the box needs changing or if the downrod length is wrong for your ceiling height, rather than after the old fixture is already down.
