First: the one call that should not be to us
If anybody in the house is confused, agitated, slurring their words, unsteady on their feet, or hard to wake, that is not somebody who is uncomfortable. That is suspected heat stroke, it is a medical emergency, and the number to ring is 911, not 703.225.8222. Ring them first and us afterwards.
Do not assume somebody is fine because they are still sweating. And if you suspect heat stroke, do not give them anything to drink. Cool them as fast as you can with cold wet towels or ice packs at the neck, armpits and groin, stay with them, and wait for the ambulance.
How to Tell the Difference, and Why It Matters Today
A house with no cooling in a heat advisory is a health question before it is a repair question, particularly with an infant, an older adult, or anybody on medication that affects how they handle heat. - Heavy sweating, with skin that is cool, pale or clammy
- Dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting
- Weakness, tiredness or muscle cramps
- A fast, weak pulse
Heat stroke, call 911
A medical emergency, immediately
- Confusion, agitation, slurred speech or aggression
- Fainting, seizures, or being hard to wake
- Skin that is hot, and may be dry or may still be sweaty
- Trouble walking or keeping balance
For heat exhaustion, move them somewhere cooler, take off what clothing you can, cool them with damp cloths or a cool shower, fan wet skin, and give cool water. Call 911 if it worsens, if it lasts more than an hour, or if there is chest pain or shortness of breath. When you are not sure which one you are looking at, treat it as the serious one.

- Burning or a hot electrical smell from the unit or the vents.

Failed capacitor or contactor
The most common heatwave failure by a distance, and very often a same visit repair.
Compressor will not start
Sometimes the compressor, often the thing feeding it. Worth diagnosing before anyone quotes you a new system.
Warm air or refrigerant loss
A system low on refrigerant has a leak. Topping it up without finding the leak is paying twice.
Frozen evaporator coil
Turn it off before we arrive. There is a section above on why running it frozen makes it worse.
Tripping breaker or electrical fault

Blower, thermostat or drain
A blocked condensate drain can trip a safety switch and stop a perfectly healthy system dead.

Will running my AC while it is frozen damage it?
It can. A coil that has iced over should be switched off and allowed to thaw, because forcing a frozen system to keep running can damage the compressor, which is the most expensive part to replace. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call us.
