A Message by our Certified HVAC Technician

I’m Peter with PRO Electric plus HVAC.

Before winter settles in, make sure your furnace, heat pump, or boiler is ready. A quick tune-up now prevents the surprise of a no-heat call on the coldest night of the year. It also lowers energy costs and helps your system last longer. Here’s why it matters.

Avoid mid-winter breakdowns

Most no-heat emergencies happen when small issues go unchecked. A tune-up catches weak igniters, dirty sensors, and tired motors before they fail.

Save money on energy bills

A clean, well-adjusted system heats faster and uses less energy. That means lower monthly bills and less strain on your equipment.

Extend the life of your system

Tight connections, clean burners or coils, and correct settings reduce wear. Your equipment runs smoother and lasts longer.

Breathe easier and stay safe

We check for carbon monoxide risks, gas leaks, blocked flues, and poor drafts. Safety comes first for your family.

Beat the rush

When the first cold snap hits, schedules fill up. Book your tune-up now and glide into winter without the scramble.

Bottom line: A simple heating tune-up prevents breakdowns, cuts energy costs, and gives you peace of mind all season.

  • Venting and flue inspection for rust, blockage, backdraft
  • Safety switch and limit control tests
  • Combustion air and clearances verified

Mechanical components

  • Blower wheel, housing, and motor inspection and cleaning
  • Fan belt condition and tension (if belt-driven)
  • Heat exchanger visual check for cracks or corrosion
  • Burners inspected and, if needed, cleaned and adjusted
  • Ignition system tested (hot surface igniter or spark)

Electrical system

  • Voltage and amperage measurements on motors and heaters
  • Tighten electrical connections and inspect wiring insulation
  • Test relays, contactors, capacitors, and sequencers
  • Verify proper ground

Airflow and filtration

  • Filter check and replacement if provided
  • Static pressure reading to confirm proper airflow
  • Return and supply plenums inspected for leaks or blockage
  • Ductwork spot check for obvious damage or disconnections

Combustion and gas settings (gas furnaces)

  • Combustion analysis for O2, CO, CO2, and efficiency
  • Gas pressure set at manifold to manufacturer spec
  • Flame sensor cleaned and flame quality verified

Heat pump specifics

  • Defrost cycle test
  • Reversing valve operation check
  • Outdoor coil inspection and rinse if needed
  • Measure temperature split and system pressures
  • Check crankcase heater function in cold weather

Condensate and drains (high-efficiency units)

  • Flush condensate trap and line
  • Check condensate pump operation
  • Inspect neutralizer media if installed

Thermostat and controls

  • Calibrate thermostat and verify staging
  • Verify fan modes and heat call operation
  • Confirm smart thermostat settings and schedules if applicable

Cleaning tasks commonly performed

  • Clean burners and flame sensor
  • Clean or wash blower wheel if dirty
  • Rinse outdoor coil on heat pumps
  • Wipe igniter area and burner compartment
  • Vacuum cabinet and return plenum area

Performance tests

  • Temperature rise across heat exchanger checked against nameplate
  • Measure supply and return temperatures
  • Verify cycle time and proper shutdown
  • Document overall system efficiency test results

What you should receive afterward

  • Written checklist of all tests performed
  • Measured readings: static pressure, temperature rise, amperage, gas pressure, and combustion numbers (when applicable)
  • Notes on any parts nearing failure with repair options and pricing
  • Filter size and recommended replacement schedule

What is usually not included

  • Major repairs or part replacements
  • Duct cleaning
  • New thermostat installs
  • Refrigerant charging for heat pumps unless a leak or performance issue is found

How often to schedule

  • Once a year for furnaces, ideally in early fall
  • Twice a year for heat pumps: once in spring and once in fall

Quick homeowner prep tips

  • Replace or have a new filter ready
  • Clear 3 feet around indoor and outdoor units
  • Make a list of any noises, smells, or error codes you have noticed

A tune-up helps prevent breakdowns, improves energy efficiency, and extends the life of your AC unit.

Regular maintenance, usually once or twice a year, can save money on repairs and utility bills.
