A Simple Guide for Northern Virginia Homeowners

Your home is fed by two main power lines, and the circuits are split between them. When one of those lines, one main breaker leg, or a shared circuit fails, everything on that half goes dark while the other half keeps working. That split is your biggest clue. It usually points to a tripped breaker, a tripped safety outlet, or in more serious cases a problem at your panel or the incoming service. Here is how to find it, safely and in order.
This is the most common cause and the easiest fix. Find your electrical panel in the basement, garage, or a utility closet. Look for any breaker that has flipped to the off position or is stuck in the middle. To reset it, push it fully to off, then firmly back to on. If power returns, a simple overload was the culprit.
These are the outlets with test and reset buttons, found in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoors. One tripped GFCI outlet can cut power to several others down the line, even in a different room. Press the reset button firmly on each one. This catches a surprising number of partial outages.
Did the power drop the moment you switched on a space heater, microwave, or hair dryer? That points to an overloaded circuit. Unplug the heavy items from the affected area, spread them across different circuits, and reset the breaker. If it holds, you found the problem.
The large breaker at the top of your panel controls power to the whole home. If it has partially tripped, it can knock out large sections. If you are comfortable, flip it fully off and back on once. If it will not hold, or you feel unsure at any point, stop here and call a professional. Do not force it.
Look outside. Are your neighbors dark too? Was there just a storm? A downed line or a utility side fault can cause a partial outage that has nothing to do with your wiring. If the issue is on the grid, contact Dominion Energy. If only your home is affected, the problem is inside, and it is time for step six.
If none of the above brings the power back, the cause is deeper, often in your home wiring or your electrical panel. These are not safe to guess at. Our Master Electrician will find the real fault and fix it right. Call 703.225.8222.
Never touch exposed wires, and never attempt a repair you are not fully confident in. Electricity does not give second chances. If a breaker keeps tripping right after you reset it, that is the system protecting you from a real fault, not a nuisance to override. And once power is restored, a surge protector helps shield your electronics from the jolt that can come when power snaps back on.
