If Your Heat Burns Fuel, Read This Before You Call Us.
Furnaces, boilers, and gas water heaters all burn fuel, and anything that burns fuel can produce carbon monoxide when it goes wrong. You cannot smell it or see it, so the order you do things in matters more than the heat does.

Do not go looking for the source. Move everyone outside to fresh air, call 911 from outside, then count heads. Do not go back in until the responders say you can, and do not run the appliance again until it has been serviced.

Carbon monoxide has no smell and no color, and it reads like flu without the fever. If more than one person in the house feels it, or it improves when you go outside, get out to fresh air first and then call 911.

That is our call to take. If snow or ice has built up around the outside vent for a fuel burning appliance, clearing it is worth doing, because a blocked flue is one of the ways carbon monoxide backs up into a house.

Heat Pump Blowing Cool Air? It Is Probably Working Fine.
Half of Northern Virginia runs on heat pumps, and this is the call we take most often in winter. It is almost always the system doing exactly what a heat pump does, and almost nobody is told to expect it.

Put your hand at the register and expect it to feel cool
A furnace burns fuel and pushes out air far hotter than you are. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, and the air it delivers lands close to the temperature of your own skin. Warm enough to heat the house over time, not warm enough to feel hot on your hand. Almost nobody is told this when they get one, and it is the single most common call we take about heat pumps.

Steam off the outdoor unit in freezing weather is the defrost cycle
The outdoor coil picks up frost when it is cold and damp, so the system reverses itself for a few minutes to melt it off. You will see vapor rising outside and the air indoors may go cool while it happens. Then it goes back to heating on its own. Nothing is broken and there is nothing to do.
When it really is a problem. Call us if the house is not reaching the temperature you set it to over several hours, if auxiliary or emergency heat is running more or less constantly, if the outdoor unit is encased in solid ice rather than lightly frosted, or if the air at the register is genuinely no warmer than the room. Those are faults. Air that feels cool on your hand while the house slowly warms up is not.
If you have a furnace rather than a heat pump. Lukewarm air points somewhere else entirely, usually a clogged filter, a thermostat fault, a failing igniter, or a system shutting itself down on a limit switch. Should I repair or replace my heating system?
If your furnace is over 15 years old, needs frequent repairs, or your bills keep climbing, replacement often makes more sense. For newer systems, a repair is usually the smart call. We give you an honest assessment either way, and our decision tool can help.
How often should my heating system be serviced?
At least once a year, ideally in fall before heating season. Regular maintenance keeps your system efficient and helps prevent breakdowns on the coldest nights. On a fuel burning system it is also the annual inspection the CPSC points to when it talks about carbon monoxide.
Why is my heater blowing lukewarm air?
Common causes include a dirty filter, a thermostat issue, a failing igniter or heating element, or a system that is short cycling. If you have a heat pump rather than a furnace, air that feels cool at the register can also be perfectly normal, which is covered further up this page. Our technicians diagnose the cause quickly and explain your options before any work begins.
Is a heat pump a good option in Northern Virginia?
Often, yes. Modern heat pumps heat efficiently even in cold weather and provide cooling in summer too, making them a strong year round option for many local homes.
