Stop Pouring Money Into a Dying AC. Upgrade and Save.
A new, energy efficient system that delivers reliable cooling and lowers your bills. Serving Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Counties.
Hi, I am Peter, an HVAC technician and Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC, and replacing aging air conditioners is a big part of what I do. If your air conditioner is constantly breaking down while your bills climb every month, you are not imagining it. An AC more than 10 years old is often costing you far more than it is worth, draining money in repairs and wasted energy while delivering less and less comfort.
The good news is that a modern, energy efficient system fixes all of that, and we handle the whole job, from pulling out the old unit to installing the new one, so the experience is smooth from start to finish. In this guide I will help you decide whether it is time to replace, what your options are, and how to pick the right system for your home and your budget.
Repair or replace? How to know your AC is done
This is the question I get more than any other, so let me give you the honest signs that a system is no longer doing its job.
- Your home is not cooling evenly. Hot and cold spots and weak airflow are a sign the system can no longer keep up.
- You need frequent, costly repairs. When you are calling for a fix every season, you are renting reliability you could own.
- It makes strange noises or runs non-stop. A unit that never cycles off, or rattles and grinds, is straining toward the end.
- It is more than 10 years old. Most central air systems last about 12 to 15 years, and efficiency drops as they age.
- It still uses old R-22 refrigerant. That refrigerant has been phased out and is expensive, so a major leak on an older unit often signals it is time.
A good rule of thumb: when a single repair approaches half the cost of a new system, replacement is usually the smarter money. We will always give you that math straight, never the most expensive option just because it is available.
Keep repairing, or replace and save?
Here is the side by side that helps most homeowners see the real choice.
Hanging on to your old AC
- Rising bills from outdated, inefficient technology
- Repair bills that keep adding up
- Hot and cold spots, weak airflow, and noise
- The risk of it failing on the hottest day of the year
Upgrading to a new system
- Lower monthly bills from modern efficiency
- A fresh warranty and reliable performance
- Even cooling, quiet operation, and better air
- Peace of mind, replaced on your schedule instead of in a crisis
Will a new AC really lower my bills?
In most homes, yes, and the reason is efficiency. Air conditioners are rated by SEER2, and a modern high-efficiency unit does the same cooling while pulling noticeably less power than a tired 10 or 15 year old system. When you are replacing an old, low-efficiency unit that runs constantly through a Northern Virginia summer, the difference shows up on your Dominion bill month after month. The new system cools better and costs less to run, which is how an upgrade pays you back over time.
Central air or ductless mini split?
There are two great ways to replace an aging system, and the right one depends on your home.
Central air replacement
Perfect if your home already has ductwork and you want whole-home cooling with a clean, modern upgrade.
Ductless mini split replacement
Ideal for homes without ducts, for additions, garages, or those rooms that never seem to cool. A mini split delivers targeted comfort right where you need it.
Carrier systems: Comfort, Performance, or Infinity?
We install Carrier, and Carrier offers three lines across both central air and ductless mini splits. Here is how each one performs from a replacement point of view, so you can match the upgrade to your home and budget.
Budget friendly
Comfort Series
No frills, just dependable comfort at an affordable price. A great fit for starter homes, rentals, or anyone who values practicality.
- Up to 16 SEER2 central, 22.2 SEER2 ductless
- Simple single stage compressors
- Easy install, easy maintenance, affordable parts
- The only line with AC only mini splits
- 10 year parts warranty with registration
Most popular value
Performance Series
The mid range sweet spot. Better comfort, lower bills, and quieter operation without the premium price.
- Up to 17 SEER2 central, mid 20s SEER2 ductless
- Two stage or inverter compressors
- Standard or smart Wi-Fi thermostat options
- Flexible single or multi zone ductless
- 10 year parts warranty with registration
Top tier premium
Infinity Series
Premium, precise, and built to last, with the best comfort, efficiency, and smart technology Carrier makes.
- Highest SEER2 with Greenspeed variable speed
- Steadiest temperatures and tightest humidity control
- Infinity Touch smart thermostat with built in Wi-Fi
- Whisper quiet operation
- 10 year parts warranty with registration
Most homeowners land on the Performance Series, since it balances comfort and savings without the top-tier price, but if you want the steadiest temperatures and the lowest running cost, the Infinity is worth every penny. We will help you choose, not upsell you.
Does the size of the system matter?
It matters a great deal, and it is where a lot of cheap installs go wrong. A unit that is too large cools the air too fast, shuts off before it removes humidity, and leaves your home cool but clammy while short cycling wears the equipment out. A unit that is too small never keeps up on the hottest days. We size every replacement to your actual home with a proper load calculation, so you get even cooling, good humidity control, and the full efficiency you paid for.
What the replacement process looks like
We make this easy. We start with a free in-home estimate, walk your home, and recommend the right system and size for the way you live. On install day, we remove the old unit, set and connect the new system, and test it fully before we leave. Because we are licensed electricians as well as HVAC technicians, the electrical side of the job, the disconnect, the breaker, and the connections, is handled in-house and done right, with no waiting on an outside contractor.
The best time to do all of this is before the peak of summer, not in the middle of a heat wave when your old unit finally quits. Replacing on your own schedule means you choose the system and the timing, instead of paying a rush premium on the hottest day of the year. Our air conditioning replacement team can lay out your options whenever you are ready.
