That outlet is a safety device, and tripping is how it does its job. It is watching for electricity leaking where it should not, and when it senses that, it cuts power fast to protect you from a shock. So when one keeps tripping, it is usually catching something real. Let me walk through what trips it and how to find the cause.
A GFCI, the outlet with the test and reset buttons, compares the electricity going out with the electricity coming back. If even a small amount goes missing, which can mean it is leaking through water or a fault, it trips. That sensitivity is the point, and it is why these outlets are required near water. The job is to figure out what it keeps sensing.
Common reasons a GFCI keeps tripping
- Moisture. Water in an outlet, in a box, or in a connected device is the most common cause, especially outdoors or in a bathroom. This overlaps an outdoor outlet that stops working after rain.
- A faulty appliance or device. Something plugged into the circuit may be leaking current. Unplug everything, reset, then add devices back one at a time to find the culprit.
