When the Heat Spikes and Your AC Falls Behind, There Is Almost Always a Reason.

Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. Every summer, the first real heat wave brings the same calls: the AC is running and running, but the house just will not cool down. Most of the time the reason is one of a handful of things, so let me walk you through them and what actually fixes each.
A quick note before we start. Some loss of ground on the very hottest days can be normal, because your system has to pull a lot more heat out of the house than usual. But if the temperature climbs and stays there, something is holding the system back, and it is worth a look.
1. The heat load has outpaced the system
On the hottest days your AC fights a much bigger heat load. A system that is a touch undersized, or a home with weak insulation, leaky ducts, or a lot of west facing glass, will fall behind when it really bakes outside. Sealing ducts, adding insulation, and shading windows all help.
2. A dirty filter or coils
Airflow is everything in cooling. A clogged filter or dirty coils choke the system and cut its capacity right when you need it most. This is the most common cause and the easiest to prevent. A fresh filter and a coil cleaning often bring back cooling people assumed was a major failure.
3. Low refrigerant
If the system is low on refrigerant, almost always from a leak, it cannot move heat well, and it shows up worst on hot days. Watch for weak cooling, long run times, ice on the lines, or a hiss. Refrigerant is not used up in normal use, so low means a leak to find and repair, not just a top off.
4. A frozen coil
Low airflow or low refrigerant can ice over the indoor coil, and then the system blows warm air while it runs hard. If you see ice on the indoor unit or the lines, shut it off, let it thaw, and have it checked. Running a frozen system can wreck the compressor.
5. A tired compressor or capacitor
The compressor is the heart of the system and the capacitor helps it start. In extreme heat, a weak capacitor or an aging compressor can fall behind or quit. Signs include the outdoor unit humming but not starting, short cycling, or a breaker that trips. These are for a technician, and I would not wait, because a struggling compressor can fail outright.
6. Thermostat or airflow trouble
Sometimes the system is fine but cool air is not reaching the rooms. A thermostat reading wrong, closed or blocked vents, leaky ducts, or a failing blower can all leave parts of the house warm. Easy to miss, and often simple to fix once we find it.
When to call us
If you have changed the filter and cleared the vents and it still cannot keep up, it is time for service. Ice on the unit, a humming outdoor unit that will not start, weak airflow, or a tripping breaker all point to something a technician should handle. Why is my AC running but not cooling in a heat wave?
Usually it is a dirty filter or coils cutting airflow, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen coil, or a heat load that has outpaced the system on an extreme day. Is it normal for an AC to struggle on very hot days?

Should I turn the AC off if it is not cooling?

Routine service keeps the coils clean, checks refrigerant and electrical parts, and catches small problems before a heat wave turns them into a breakdown. The systems that fail on the hottest days are usually the ones that skipped maintenance.
Does a dirty filter really matter that much?
Yes. Airflow is central to how an AC removes heat, and a clogged filter chokes the whole system. It can cut cooling, freeze the coil, and make everything work harder for less. Changing the filter on schedule is the simplest way to protect both your comfort and the equipment.
