When the Outside Fan Stops, Shut the System Off.
Air conditioning repair across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Counties.
Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. Here is a situation I get called about all summer. The thermostat is set to cool, you can hear the outdoor unit humming, but the fan on top is not turning. That is a specific kind of failure, and the most important thing to know is that you should turn the system off when you see it, because running it that way can do real damage. Let me explain what is usually going on.
The fan on top of your outdoor unit pulls heat away from the system. When the unit is powered and humming but that fan sits still, the compressor is trying to work with nowhere for the heat to go, and it can overheat quickly.
Why the fan stops but the unit hums
- A failed start capacitor. This is the most common cause. The capacitor gives the fan motor the jolt it needs to start, and when it fails the motor hums but cannot turn.
- A burned out fan motor. The motor itself can fail from age or heat, leaving the fan dead even though the unit has power.
- A seized or obstructed fan. Debris, a stick, or worn bearings can physically stop the blades from turning.
- A control or wiring fault. Less often, a relay or wiring problem stops power from reaching the motor.
Turn it off, and do not give the fan a push
There is an old trick of starting the fan with a stick, and I want to steer you away from it. If the fan needs a push to start, the part that starts it has failed, and running the compressor while it overheats is how a manageable repair turns into a new compressor. The safe move is to switch the system off at the thermostat, and ideally at the outdoor disconnect, and have it looked at. This is different from an AC that will not turn on at all, which is usually electrical.
Why running it anyway is risky
With the fan stopped, the heat the system is pulling out of your home has nowhere to escape, so it builds up inside the outdoor unit. The compressor is the expensive heart of the system, and heat is what kills it. A failed capacitor or fan motor is a routine, affordable repair. A compressor that cooked because the unit ran for hours with a dead fan is a different conversation, sometimes the point where you weigh whether to repair or replace the system.
How we help
We find out why the fan stopped, whether that is the capacitor, the motor, the bearings, or the wiring, and replace the part that failed. In most cases it is a same-day fix. While we are there, we check the rest of the system, since a fan that struggled often points to airflow or maintenance issues, like a long overdue air filter change. We handle this across Northern Virginia.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my AC outside fan not spinning but the unit is humming?
A humming outdoor unit with a still fan most often means a failed start capacitor, which gives the fan motor the push it needs to turn. It can also be a burned out fan motor, a seized fan, or a wiring fault. In every case, the system should be turned off rather than left running.
Is it safe to run my AC if the outside fan is not spinning?
No. With the fan stopped, heat builds up in the outdoor unit with nowhere to go, and that heat can ruin the compressor, which is the most expensive part of the system. Turn the system off at the thermostat and have it repaired before running it again.
Can I start the AC fan by pushing it with a stick?
It is best not to. If the fan needs a manual push to start, the component that starts it has already failed, and running the compressor while it overheats risks serious damage. The push trick treats the symptom while the real problem keeps cooking the system. Have the failed part replaced instead.
Why would a newer looking AC have a fan that stops?
Even a newer unit can lose a capacitor, since capacitors are wear parts that fail from heat and age regardless of how the rest of the system looks. A stopped fan is about that specific part, not the overall condition of the unit, which is why it is usually a quick fix.
How fast can a stopped fan damage my AC?
It can happen within minutes to an hour, because the heat has nowhere to escape once the fan stops. That is why the advice is always to shut the system off the moment you notice the fan is not spinning, rather than letting it run while you wait for a repair.
