Repair or Replace? The Honest Way to Decide on Your AC.
Air conditioning repair and replacement across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Counties.
Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. When your AC struggles, the first question is always the same: do I fix it or replace it? There is no single answer, but there is a clear way to think it through. Let me walk you through how I help homeowners decide.
The goal is not to sell you a new system. It is to land on the choice that gives you reliable comfort for the best value over time.
Start with the age of the system
Age is the biggest factor. Most central AC systems last about 10 to 15 years. If yours is under about 8 years old and the repair is minor, fixing it is usually the smart move. If it is past 12 years and the repair is significant, replacement often makes more sense because more failures tend to follow.
Weigh the repair against the system
- The size of the repair. A small, routine repair on a newer system is easy to justify. A major repair on an older one is where replacement enters the picture.
- The repair history. If you have called for the same system several times in recent summers, the pattern matters more than any single fix.
- Efficiency. Older systems run far less efficiently than today’s units, so an aging system can cost more to run every month.
- Comfort. If the system never quite keeps up, replacing it can solve a problem repairs only patch, which I cover in why an AC cannot keep up in a heat wave.
When replacement is the better value
Replacement tends to win when the system is old, the repair is large, the efficiency is poor, and you plan to stay in the home. A modern system runs more efficiently and reliably, and if you are replacing anyway, it is the right moment to consider a heat pump instead of a straight AC, which heats and cools from one system.
When repair is the right call
Repair usually wins when the system is relatively young, the fault is specific and contained, the unit has been reliable, and the efficiency is still reasonable. A good repair on a sound system buys you years and is the responsible recommendation. We tell you honestly which side of the line you are on.
Frequently asked questions
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
It depends mostly on age, the size of the repair, and the system efficiency. A minor repair on a system under about 8 years old is usually worth it. A major repair on a system past 12 years old, especially one that has needed several fixes, often points to replacement as the better value.
How long does a central AC system last?
Most central air conditioning systems last about 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance. As a system passes the 12 year mark, failures tend to become more frequent and efficiency drops, which is when replacement starts to make more sense than continued repairs.
Is it worth repairing an old AC unit?
If the unit is older, has needed repeated repairs, and the current fix is significant, repair is often throwing good money after bad. A younger system with a single contained fault is usually worth repairing. The repair history and the age together tell the story.
Does a new AC system save money?
A modern system runs more efficiently than an aging one, so it generally costs less to operate each month. If your current system is old and inefficient, the monthly savings and improved reliability are part of why replacement can be the better long term value.
Should I replace my AC with a heat pump?
If you are replacing anyway, a heat pump is worth considering because it both heats and cools from one system and runs efficiently. For many Northern Virginia homes it is a strong option. Whether it fits depends on your current setup, which we are happy to assess.
