Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. A lot of older Northern Virginia homes were built with 100 amp electrical service, which was plenty at the time. Today’s homes ask a lot more of the panel, and many are bumping against that limit. Let me explain when a 200 amp upgrade makes sense and when it does not.

This is not about pushing everyone to a bigger panel. It is about whether your service can comfortably carry the way you actually use power.

Why 100 amp service can fall short

When many of these homes were built, there were far fewer electrical demands. Now we add central air, electric ranges, dryers, multiple electronics, and increasingly EV chargers. All of that adds up. A 100 amp service can run out of headroom, and that shows up as tripped breakers, a full panel with no room to add circuits, and a system working at its limit.

Signs you may need an upgrade

What the upgrade involves

A service upgrade replaces your panel and service equipment with a higher capacity setup, typically 200 amp, with breakers and a panel that give you room to grow. We coordinate with the utility, pull the permit, complete the work, and have it inspected. It is usually done in a day, with a planned power interruption while we make the change. It is part of our panel and breaker service.

When you may not need it

Not every home needs 200 amp service. If your panel has open spaces, your system is not straining, and you are not adding a large load, your existing service may be perfectly adequate. We will tell you honestly. A failing or overloaded panel is one of the signs a home electrical system is failing, but a healthy 100 amp service that fits your needs is not a problem to solve.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to upgrade to 200 amp service?

You may if your panel is full with no room for new circuits, you are adding a large load like an EV charger, breakers trip often, or you have an older hazard brand panel. If your panel has open space and your system is not straining, your existing service may be fine.

What are the signs I need an electrical panel upgrade?

Common signs are a full panel with no room to add circuits, breakers that trip frequently, reliance on extension cords for everyday needs, an older or hazard brand panel, and plans to add a major load such as an EV charger or hot tub.

Is 100 amp service enough for a house?

It can be for a smaller home with modest demands, but many homes now use far more power than 100 amp service was meant to carry, especially with central air, electric appliances, and EV charging. Whether it is enough depends on how you actually use power.

How long does a 200 amp service upgrade take?

Many service upgrades are completed in a day, with a planned power interruption while we swap the panel and service equipment. We coordinate with the utility, pull the permit, and have the work inspected so the new service is safe and to code.

Does adding an EV charger require a panel upgrade?

Not always. If your panel has enough spare capacity, an EV charger can often be added without an upgrade. If the panel is full or undersized, an upgrade may be needed first so the charger has a safe, properly sized circuit. We check before quoting.
