Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. One of the first questions people ask about a home EV charger is what it will cost. Every home is different, so rather than guess at a number, let me explain the factors that actually drive the price. Once you understand these, the quote makes sense.

The charger itself is only part of it. Most of the variation comes from your panel and the path the new circuit has to take.

Your panel and its capacity

The single biggest factor is whether your electrical panel can handle the new load. If it has room and capacity, the job is simpler. If it is full or undersized, you may need a panel upgrade first, which I cover in whether your panel can handle an EV charger. That is the main reason two homes can have very different quotes.

The distance and path of the circuit

  • Distance from the panel. The farther the charger is from your panel, the more wire and labor the job takes.
  • The route. A clean path through an unfinished basement or garage is straightforward. Running through finished walls or across the house is more involved.
  • Indoor or outdoor. An outdoor or detached garage location adds weatherproofing and sometimes trenching.
  • Panel capacity. If a panel upgrade is needed to support the charger, that is a project of its own.

The charger and the circuit

The charger you choose plays a part, and so does the circuit it needs. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240 volt circuit and an appropriately sized breaker. The charger model, whether it is a Tesla Wall Connector or a universal unit, and its amperage all factor in.

The permit and the right install

A proper install includes the permit and inspection, which I explain in do you need a permit for an EV charger. That is part of doing it safely and to code, and it protects you on insurance and resale. We give you a clear quote up front after we see your panel and the run, with no surprises. The EV charger tool can help you start planning, and the install is handled through our EV charger installation service.

Frequently asked questions

What affects the cost of installing an EV charger?

The biggest factors are whether your electrical panel has the capacity for the new load, the distance and path from the panel to the charger, whether the location is indoor or outdoor, and the charger and circuit you choose. A panel that needs upgrading is the most common reason quotes vary widely.

Why might I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

If your panel is already full or does not have enough capacity, it cannot safely carry the large continuous load an EV charger adds. In that case a panel upgrade comes first so the charger has a safe, properly sized circuit to run on. Not every home needs this, which is why we check.

Does the location of the charger change the cost?

Yes. A charger close to the panel with a clean path is the simplest install. The farther away it is, and the more it has to route through finished walls, outdoors, or to a detached garage, the more wire, labor, and weatherproofing the job involves.

Is a permit included in EV charger installation?

It should be. A proper installation includes pulling the permit and passing inspection, which confirms the work is safe and to code. We handle the permit and inspection as a standard part of the install, so you end up with documentation that protects you.

How do I get an accurate EV charger installation quote?

The most accurate quote comes after we see your panel and the path the circuit needs to take. Once we know your panel capacity, the distance to the charger, and the location, we can give you a clear price up front with no surprises.
