Window Units Got You Through the Summer. A Mini Split Does It Better, All Year.
Replacing window air conditioners with mini splits across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Counties.
Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. The window air conditioner is the classic stopgap. A room runs hot, you buy a window unit, you wrestle it into the frame every spring and out every fall, and it gets you through the summer. It works, sort of, but everyone who relies on window units knows the downsides: the noise, the dripping, the blocked window, the draft they let in all winter, and the electric bill they run up while only ever cooling, never heating.
A ductless mini split is what a window unit wishes it could be. It cools and heats, so it works year round instead of being hauled in and out. It is far quieter, because the noisy compressor lives outside. It does not block your window or your view. It seals up your wall instead of leaving a drafty gap. And it is dramatically more efficient, so it does the same job for a fraction of the running cost. For a home leaning on one or several window units, replacing them with a mini split is one of the better comfort upgrades you can make.
Let me walk through the real trouble with window units, why a mini split is the upgrade, and how the swap works, including replacing several units at once.
The trouble with window units
- They are loud. The compressor sits right there in the room, so a window unit rattles and hums the whole time it runs, in the room you are trying to relax or sleep in.
- They block the window. A window unit takes over a window, cutting your light, your view, and your ability to open it.
- They are a security and insulation weak point. A unit wedged in a window is easier to defeat than a locked window, and the gaps around it leak air.
- They leak in winter. Left in place over winter, a window unit is a hole in your wall that lets cold air pour in, and taking it out and storing it is a seasonal chore.
- They only cool. A window air conditioner does nothing for you in winter, so you still need a separate heat source for that room.
- They are inefficient and run up the bill. Window units are far less efficient than a modern mini split, so they cost more to run for the cooling they provide, adding to a high electric bill.
Why a mini split is the upgrade
- It is quiet. With a ductless mini split, the compressor is the outdoor unit, so the indoor head is whisper quiet, a world away from a window unit droning beside you.
- It does not block the window. The indoor head mounts high on a wall, so your window, light, and view all stay clear and usable.
- It heats and cools. A mini split both heats and cools, so the same unit that replaces your summer window unit also warms the room in winter.
- It is permanent and secure. A mini split is a sealed, installed system, with no annual wrestling in and out and no drafty gap or security weak point in the window.
- It is far more efficient. A modern mini split delivers much more comfort per unit of electricity than a window air conditioner, so your bills drop for the same cooling, with strong efficiency ratings.
- It dehumidifies and filters. A mini split pulls humidity out as it cools and filters the air, so the room feels better, not just cooler, and helps with a humid house.
One outdoor unit can replace several window units at once
Here is the part that surprises people. If you have window units in several rooms, a bedroom, an office, a living room, you do not need a separate system for each. A single outdoor unit can connect to multiple indoor heads, one in each room, with independent temperature control in every one. That means a multi zone mini split can replace several window units across the house in one project, leaving every one of those windows clear and every room quietly heated and cooled year round. So the upgrade is not just one for one. A house that currently looks like it has air conditioners hanging out of three windows can come out the other side with clean windows everywhere and one tidy outdoor unit. If you are tired of the window unit look and the window unit noise, this is the way out.
From window units to a mini split
The swap is straightforward. We assess the rooms that currently rely on window units, size a mini split for each, and decide whether one multi head system or separate units fits best. Each mini split gets its own correctly sized dedicated circuit, which is part of why doing it with a combined electrical and HVAC team matters, the unit and its wiring are handled together. The window units come out, the windows go back to being windows, and the rooms get quiet, efficient, year round comfort. For the broader case, our guide on why install a ductless mini split is a good companion.
How we help
We replace your window air conditioners with a mini split, sizing one or a multi head system for the rooms that need it and running the dedicated circuits, all under one roof. You get quiet, efficient heating and cooling, clear windows, and lower bills, instead of units you drag in and out every year. We do this across Northern Virginia.
Frequently asked questions
Is a mini split better than a window air conditioner?
In almost every way, yes. A ductless mini split is much quieter because the compressor is outside, it does not block your window or view, it heats as well as cools so it works year round, it is far more efficient so it costs less to run, and it is a permanent, secure installation with no seasonal wrestling in and out. A window unit is a cheap stopgap, while a mini split is a lasting comfort upgrade.
Can a mini split replace several window units in my house?
Yes. A single outdoor unit can connect to multiple indoor heads, one per room, each with its own temperature control. So a multi zone mini split can replace window units in several rooms at once, a bedroom, an office, a living room, in one project. Every one of those windows ends up clear, and every room gets quiet, efficient heating and cooling year round, served by one tidy outdoor unit.
Will a mini split lower my electric bill compared to window units?
It should reduce the cost of cooling those rooms. A modern ductless mini split is far more efficient than a typical window air conditioner, delivering more comfort per unit of electricity, so you get the same or better cooling for less. A mini split also heats efficiently, so if you were using electric space heaters in winter too, the savings can be larger across the whole year.
Does a mini split heat, or just cool like a window unit?
A mini split both heats and cools, which is a major advantage over a window air conditioner that only cools. The same unit that replaces your summer window unit also warms the room efficiently in winter by moving heat into it. That means one system handles the room year round, so you do not need a separate heater, and you are not putting a window unit in and taking it out every season.
What is involved in replacing window units with a mini split?
We assess the rooms relying on window units, size a mini split for each, and determine whether one multi head system or separate units fits best. Each mini split needs its own dedicated circuit, which we run as part of the job since we are Master Electricians and HVAC technicians. The window units come out, an indoor head goes high on the wall, a small line set connects to the outdoor unit, and the windows are clear again.
Are window units really that much worse than a mini split?
For comfort, efficiency, and convenience, yes. Window units are loud because the compressor is in the room, they block the window and view, they are a security and air leakage weak point, they only cool, and they are inefficient. They also have to be installed and removed seasonally. A mini split is quiet, efficient, heats and cools, leaves windows clear, and is permanent, so it solves all of those drawbacks at once.
