Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. When a furnace turns on, runs for only a minute or two, shuts off, then starts again a short while later, that is called short cycling. It is hard on the system and it usually means something is making the furnace stop before it has finished its job. Let me explain what causes it and why it is worth fixing sooner rather than later.
A healthy furnace runs in steady cycles long enough to warm the house evenly. When those cycles get short and frequent, the furnace is reacting to a problem, and the constant starting and stopping puts wear on the parts that fail most expensively.
What causes a furnace to short cycle
- A clogged air filter. This is the most common cause. A dirty filter chokes airflow, the furnace overheats, and a safety control shuts it down before it should.
- An overheating limit switch. When the furnace runs too hot, often because of poor airflow, the high limit switch cuts it off to protect it, then it restarts once it cools.
- A blocked or leaky duct system. Restricted airflow from closed vents, blocked returns, or leaky ducts causes the same overheating shutdown, and shows up as weak airflow from your vents.
- A flame sensor or ignition problem. A dirty flame sensor can make the furnace shut down shortly after lighting, then try again.
- An oversized furnace. A furnace too large for the home heats the air fast, satisfies the thermostat quickly, and shuts off, only to repeat. This one is built in rather than a failure.
Start with the filter, it is the usual suspect
Before anything else, check the air filter. A clogged filter is behind a large share of the short cycling calls I get, because it starves the furnace of the airflow it needs and trips the safety that shuts it down on high heat. A fresh filter is inexpensive and sometimes fixes the whole problem. It is the same airflow issue that sits behind a lot of filter related complaints.
Why short cycling is worth fixing
Each time the furnace starts, it draws its hardest and runs its hottest. A furnace that short cycles does this many more times than it should, which wears out the ignition, the blower, and the heat exchanger faster, and it burns fuel less efficiently. It is the heating version of the same problem I describe when an AC keeps turning on and off. Catching it early keeps a small fix from turning into a big one.
