A Panel That Buzzes or Feels Warm Is Talking to You. Listen to It.
Panel diagnosis and replacement across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Counties.
Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. Your electrical panel should be quiet and cool to the touch. If it is humming loudly, buzzing, crackling, or feels warm, that is not normal, and it is worth understanding before it becomes a bigger problem. Let me explain what those signs mean.
A faint hum from a panel can be normal. A loud buzz, a crackle, or real warmth is not. The difference matters.
What is normal and what is not
A very faint hum from the panel can come from the normal flow of electricity and is usually fine. What is not fine is a loud buzzing or humming, a crackling or sizzling sound, a panel that is warm or hot to the touch, or any scorching or burning smell. Those point to a real problem inside.
What causes it
- A loose connection. A loose wire or lug arcing inside the panel causes buzzing and heat, and it is a serious fire risk.
- A failing breaker. A breaker that is worn or not seated right can buzz and warm up instead of tripping cleanly.
- An overloaded panel. A panel pushed past its capacity runs hot under heavy load.
- A hazard brand panel. Older Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are known to run into exactly these problems.
What to do
Warm panel or crackling means call now
If your panel is warm or hot to the touch, crackling, or giving off a burning smell, treat it as urgent. If you can safely do so, turn off the main breaker and call a licensed electrician right away. If you see smoke or flame, leave and call 911. Do not open the panel cover yourself.
Why the panel matters so much
The panel is the heart of your home electrical system. A problem there affects everything downstream and is one of the most direct signs a home electrical system is failing. If the panel is buzzing, warm, or an older hazard brand, the fix is usually a repair or replacement under our panel and breaker service. If yours is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, here is why those panels are a problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for an electrical panel to buzz?
A very faint hum can be normal from the flow of electricity, but a loud buzzing, humming, crackling, or sizzling sound is not. Those usually mean a loose connection arcing, a failing breaker, or an overloaded panel, all of which need a professional look.
Why is my electrical panel warm or hot?
A panel should be cool to the touch. Warmth or heat usually means a loose connection, a failing breaker, or an overloaded panel generating heat inside. It is a serious warning sign. If safe to do so, turn off the main breaker and call an electrician right away.
Is a buzzing electrical panel dangerous?
It can be. Loud buzzing often comes from a loose connection arcing inside the panel, which generates heat and is a fire risk. Combined with warmth, a burning smell, or crackling, it is urgent. Do not open the panel yourself; call a licensed electrician.
What should I do if my panel is buzzing and warm?
If you can safely reach it, turn off the main breaker to cut power and call a licensed electrician right away. Do not remove the panel cover or try to fix it yourself. If you see smoke or flame, leave the home and call 911 first.
Can an old electrical panel cause buzzing and heat?
Yes. Older and hazard brand panels, including Federal Pacific and Zinsco, are known to develop loose connections and failing breakers that buzz and run warm. If your panel is one of these and showing these signs, replacement is usually the right fix.
