Your AC Has a Normal Hum. New Noises Are Clues.
Air conditioning repair across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Prince William Counties.
Hi, I am Peter, the Master Electrician at PRO Electric plus HVAC. Every air conditioner makes some noise, and you get used to the steady hum yours makes. So when a new sound shows up, banging, buzzing, screeching, or rattling, it stands out, and it is usually the system telling you something. The good news is that the type of noise is a pretty good clue to what is going on. Let me walk through the common ones.
A change in sound is worth paying attention to. Some noises are minor and some mean stop the system now, and knowing which is which can save you a bigger repair.
What the noises usually mean
- Banging or clanking. This often means a loose or broken part inside the compressor, or a fan blade that has come out of balance. It is one to take seriously.
- Buzzing. Electrical buzzing can point to a failing capacitor, a contactor, or loose wiring, and it sometimes comes with a fan that will not spin.
- Screeching or squealing. A high pitched sound often comes from a motor or a worn bearing under strain.
- Clicking that does not stop. A click at startup and shutdown is normal. Constant clicking can be a control or relay problem.
- Rattling. Loose hardware, debris in the unit, or panels that need tightening are common and usually minor, but worth checking before they loosen more.
Which noises mean stop now
A loud bang or a burning smell with noise means shut it off
Most AC noises can wait a day or two for a visit, but a sudden loud bang, grinding metal, or any noise that comes with a burning smell is different. Those can mean a part is failing in a way that will damage the rest of the system or is an electrical hazard. In that case, turn the system off at the thermostat and have it checked before running it again.
Why a noisy AC is worth a look
A new noise is almost always a part wearing out, coming loose, or losing balance. Caught early, most of these are small repairs. Left alone, a loose part can damage the things around it, and a straining motor can burn out. A noisy system that is also old and tired can factor into whether it makes sense to repair or replace it, but plenty of noises are simple fixes on a unit with years left.
How we help
We track the noise to its source, whether that is a motor, a fan, a capacitor, loose hardware, or debris, and fix it before it turns into something bigger. Sometimes the cause is as simple as airflow strain from a clogged air filter. We handle air conditioning repair across Northern Virginia.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my AC making a loud banging noise?
Banging or clanking usually means a loose or broken part inside the compressor, or a fan blade that has gone out of balance. It is one of the noises to take seriously, since a loose part can damage what is around it. Turn the system off and have it checked rather than running it.
What does a buzzing AC mean?
Electrical buzzing often points to a failing capacitor, a worn contactor, or loose wiring. It sometimes comes alongside a fan that hums but will not spin. Because buzzing is usually electrical, it is worth diagnosing promptly rather than letting it run.
Why is my AC screeching or squealing?
A high pitched screech or squeal usually comes from a motor or a worn bearing under strain. It is the sound of a part working harder than it should, which tends to get worse, so it is best looked at before the motor fails completely.
Which AC noises are an emergency?
A sudden loud bang, the sound of grinding metal, or any noise that comes with a burning smell means turn the system off right away. Those point to a part failing in a way that can damage the system or create an electrical hazard. Most other noises can wait a short time for a repair visit.
Is a rattling AC something to worry about?
Rattling is often minor, usually loose hardware, panels, or debris that has gotten into the unit. It is worth tightening or clearing before it loosens further and turns into a bigger problem, but it is generally not the urgent kind of noise that a bang or grinding sound is.
